B-17 Flight over the Statue of Liberty Memorial Day

B-17 Flight over the Statue of Liberty Memorial Day

B-17 Bomber Circles the Statue of Liberty Memorial Day 2010

For Memorial Day a flight of a classic B-17 Bomber made 2 passes around Liberty Island in a tribute for 7 CIA Agents who were killed in Afghanistan. check out the video here. My expectations when I heard that this was going to happen was that this bomber was going to fly directly over the statue and dump a huge load of flower pedals or flowers over liberty island. That wasn’t the case. I saw a news highlight before the plane took off and the pilot was handed a small bouquet of flowers and I believe that they just threw those out the window at some point. They also did not fly OVER the statue they flew around it twice and not even all that close either before they headed back to Staten Island.

Here's the reality of that B-17 flight. Flowers don't drop like 500 pounders. They travel in the slip stream of an aircraft doing 300 mph plus and were let go by the CIA Director from the top dorsel window of the radio room as close to the Statue as permitted by the FAA. The formation flight was also buffeted by high winds so flying information would have endangered people and this was pulled back. I suspect this is about expectations on the ground – this flight wasn't meant to be an extension of the air show but to provide transport for a solemn purpose. It meant every expectation of the families who lost their loved ones and fulfilled the mission of the memorial program. I would respectfully propose to get up close and personal with these vintage aircraft come out to the Airpower Museum at Republic.
