Zoom H4N corrupt files for no reason – unreliable audio recording device

I have been using the Zoom H4N for 6 months now and recently one file has been showing up with no data on it at all.

I even tried putting the card back into the device to see if maybe it was playable on there and it comes up as invalid file.

I always have fresh batteries in my zoom, I have heard that if you are recording on the zoom and your battery dies, whatever you were recording at that moment will not save. In the cases of the two corrupt files I have this has not been the case. I either have my zoom plugged into AC or I never let the batteries get down to 1 bar.

This scares me big time and makes me doubt wether or not the file im recording will be there when im done. I am in the process of contacting Zoom about this problem Im not sure if it is a memory card issue or the device itself but for the time being I do not feel safe. I have heard others having the same problem and switching devices all together. I have heard the Tascam recording device is where they are going.

I use the Tascam and I would not go to any other device. http://www.absolutepresence.com/2009/12/audio-f…

Are you sure it's the device and not the card?
Let us know how this plays out. I'm very close to getting one of these myself so keep us up to date!

I have both at the moment. I don’t like the mics and preamps on the Tascam DR100 as much as those in the H4n, but it’s simpler, less prone to file-related fails and has wheels for adjusting the gain. It also has less self-noise, the floor on the H4n is way too high for my tastes.

    So I use the Tascam.

If you took the time to call Zoom you would find out that you are using an incompatible memory card. If you visit the following link, there are a list of memory cards for use with H4n. http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4n/SDlist.html

Please do your homework before you hurl accusations.

    1. If it required the use of specific cards than it should be in the manual or on the box I shouldn’t have to do research online before using ANY product.
    2. I believe this is a free country and I can write anything I please on MY website!

I agree. Just thought you should know. I hope this corrects your issue.

Funny enough, I’m having the same issue, but with the 1GB card that they sent me with the device… and after looking, that card isn’t on their list. Seems crazy they would include a card that isn’t approved.
